Where to cool down in NYC during extreme heat
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – New Yorkers have several ways to cool down during extreme heat this week.
An extreme heat advisory starts Sunday afternoon and lasts through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures could reach 100 degrees.
At least 35 cooling centers are open on Sunday for New Yorkers to hang out in air conditioning, including Petco locations in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens for pets. Museums and community centers are also open to cool off.
In Queens, the Central, Flushing, Far Rockaway and Kew Gardens Hills libraries will be open on Sunday as cooling centers. In Brooklyn, the Central, Brooklyn Heights, Greenpoint, Kings Highway, Macon, Midwood and New Lots libraries are open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. as cooling centers. “Know your cool options, whether it’s your own home, the home of a friend or family member with an air conditioner, a mall, a library, a museum, or an official city cooling center,” Mayor Eric Adams said Saturday.
The city has drinking fountains and sprinklers to cool down during hot days. To find other cooling areas, like streets with lots of tree shade, click here.
