IAEA Chief Grossi warns of grave Nuclear Risks amid Iran-Israel conflict
The UN warned Friday of escalating nuclear safety risks in Iran, calling for maximum restraint and renewed diplomacy amid increasing attacks between Israel and Iran.
Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has raised concerns about the potential risks of attacks on nuclear facilities, including those in Bushehr and other high-density areas like Tehran. He warned that such attacks could lead to the release of radioactive materials, with catastrophic consequences for both the region and the world.
Grossi emphasized that armed assaults on nuclear sites should never happen and cautioned that the ramifications of such actions could extend far beyond the affected areas. The IAEA’s top official called for global awareness, stressing that nuclear facilities and materials should be protected at all costs.
“Attacks on nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic of Iran have caused a sharp degradation in nuclear safety and security in Iran. Though they have not so far led to a radiological release affecting the public, there is a danger this could occur,” International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Rafael Grossi told a Security Council session.
During a session at the United Nations Security Council, Grossi reaffirmed the IAEA’s commitment to continuing its operations in Iran. He expressed readiness to resume inspections once conditions allow but underscored that the safety of IAEA inspectors remains a top priority. He urged Iran to ensure secure communications with the agency.
Grossi also highlighted the crucial need for international cooperation in safeguarding nuclear infrastructure. He told the Security Council members that nuclear facilities and materials must not become casualties of ongoing conflicts, noting that the IAEA would not stand idle in the face of such threats.
In response to escalating tensions in the region, Grossi called on the international community to seize the opportunity for peace. He proposed that a diplomatic solution remains within reach, warning that failure to act could result in prolonged conflict and an imminent nuclear arms race.
Grossi’s remarks are particularly significant as Israel has previously targeted Iran’s nuclear sites. While these attacks have not yet led to the release of radioactive materials affecting the public, Grossi cautioned that the risk remains a serious concern. Continued attacks could have disastrous effects, with lasting consequences for global security.
The IAEA’s proactive role in maintaining nuclear security and its efforts to resume inspections are crucial for ensuring regional stability. As global tensions persist, diplomatic engagement remains the most viable solution to avoid further escalation and prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.
