'I believe in miracles': Hamas hostage returns to NJ
NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- The streets of Tenafly, N.J., erupted in cheers Thursday afternoon as the community celebrated the long-awaited return of Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old resident, freed after 854 days in Hamas captivity.
Supporters lined the streets, waving Israeli flags and holding signs of support for the young man, whose return has been the subject of nearly two years of prayer and hope.
The crowd cheered as Edan, now home, was welcomed by family and friends.
"We were always hopeful, but no one knew for sure," said Ilan, a supporter. "You have to keep hope."
"I believe in miracles, and this is it," said Roberto, another supporter. "It's a miraculous day."
Edan’s return was made possible after a deal was brokered to release the last remaining American hostage with the help of Washington diplomats.
The journey home was complicated by ongoing Iranian missile strikes that grounded flights in Israel. Despite this, the U.S. Air Force provided a ride home for Edan and his mother.
"There are no words," said Kate Davis, a local mother. "We’re just grateful for everyone who helped make this happen and bring him home safely."
Edan, who graduated from high school in Tenafly in 2022, enlisted in the Israeli Defense Forces shortly after. On October 7, he was taken hostage while stationed on the southern border with Gaza.
Following his release, Edan reached out to former President Donald Trump.
"Just because of you, you saved my life. That’s the only reason I’m here," Edan said during the call.
As the community cheered, the long-awaited homecoming marked the end of a harrowing chapter for Edan and his family. However, there’s still uncertainty for 53 other families whose loved ones have yet to be released.
