Man critically hurt in shooting, teen suspect arrested, Salem police say
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man is in critical condition and a teen suspect is in custody after a shooting in west Salem on Wednesday night, authorities said.
The Salem Police Department said they responded just before 6 p.m. to multiple gunfire reports near the 1200 block of Orchard Heights Road Northwest.
Witnesses said the disturbance involved "a group of teenagers" that suddenly erupted in shots fired, police said.
One suspect was spotted running from the scene.
"Arriving officers found a 21-year-old male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. They provided immediate medical aid to the victim before paramedics arrived. The victim was transported to Salem Health in serious condition," Salem police said.
Following a search involving dogs and drones, a 16-year-old was located in the 1000 block of Cascade Drive Northwest. The teen was taken into custody and booked into the Yamhill Juvenile Detention Center. He now faces multiple charges under the Polk County District Attorney's Office.
The area of street where the shooting happened was shut down for about three hours while the investigation was carried out earlier Wednesday evening.
An active investigation is still underway.
