‘Flagship platform for young people from Global South’ – official on BRICS energy summit

Youth leaders from BRICS nations convened in Brasilia to discuss the sustainable energy future and policy recommendations

The BRICS Youth Energy Summit is “a flagship platform” for young people from the Global South, Alexander Kormishin, chairperson and director-general of the group’s Youth Energy Agency, has said.

Brazil hosted the event in its capital, Brasilia, earlier this week, bringing together over 100 participants, including young professionals, government officials, and senior energy experts from across the BRICS countries.

The summit has become “the flagship platform for young people from the Global South” where young leaders from BRICS and beyond can discuss practical ways to build a better future in the field of energy, Kormishin said in an interview on Wednesday. “We have delegations from ministries of energy, major corporations and stakeholders in the energy sector,” he said, adding that participants at the forum “have been planning how they can contribute” to developments in the sector.

A key highlight of the event was the soft launch of the BRICS Youth Energy Outlook, an annual report developed by over 50 young researchers from BRICS countries. The report addresses key topics such as low-carbon systems, sustainable fuels, energy accessibility, and critical minerals. It will be officially launched at COP30 in November 2025 in Belem, Brazil.

The outlook “practically unleashes the future of the sector because this is where young people share their views and what is important for them right now,” Kormishin pointed out. “Young people here are practically understanding why they are in this community, why they are implementing the projects and initiatives, because this is something that will eventually occur at the tables of ministers and decision makers,” the BRICS Youth Energy Agency chairperson explained.

Kormishin also noted that if stakeholders fail to involve youth and explain the significance of technologies such as clean coal and oil recovery, the younger generation may increasingly favor renewable energy sources, which are not yet universally accessible.

Therefore, fostering cooperation among young individuals in the energy field is crucial at this time.

The summit is the official youth platform of the BRICS group, which now includes ten member states: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia. Organized under Brazil’s rotating BRICS presidency in 2025, the event featured youth delegations, academic leaders, and major energy companies. Long-time summit partner Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, emphasized the importance of the role of young professionals in energy.

“By joining forces, we can implement joint research, exchange expertise, and create new solutions for global markets,” said Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev. “Our Obninsk Tech hub unites top young nuclear professionals from around the world.”

The city of Obninsk in Kaluga Region is where the world’s first nuclear power plant began operating in1954. The facility, which was phased out in 2002 and is now a museum, had served for some time as a testing ground for pioneering nuclear technologies.

Speakers at the summit included senior representatives from Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, India’s Ministry of Power, and other national institutions. The event also celebrated ten years of BRICS youth energy cooperation, reaffirming the bloc’s long-term commitment to inclusive energy dialogue.

The summit was organized by Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy and the National Youth Secretariat, in collaboration with the BRICS Youth Energy Agency and Rosatom.
