GUNSHOTS, TINNED FISH AND TERROR! Armed gang storms shop in movie-style robbery

IT was a scene straight out of an action movie when a gang of four armed thugs stormed a shop in Bulawayo’s Pumula suburb, fired a warning shot into the air and made off with cash, gadgets and even tinned fish.
The dramatic heist, which took place on April 18 around 7pm, landed 45-year-old Maxwell Moyo in the dock this week, facing serious armed robbery charges.
Appearing before Magistrate Sibongile Marondedze, Moyo was fingered as one of the brains behind the robbery that left shop owner Gracious Ncube shaken and out of pocket.
Court prosecutor Christina Manyika told how Moyo teamed up with Nhlanhla Ncube and Learnmore Sibanda, both now cooling off at Khami Remand Prison, along with Abraham Sibanda who is still on the run.
The gang reportedly armed themselves to the teeth with a pistol, a machete and an okapi knife before targeting Awande Enterprise, specifically Gracious’s shop.
“One of the suspects fired a shot in the air to terrify the victim and ordered her to lie flat on the ground,” said Manyika.
Without wasting time, Moyo allegedly jumped over the counter and grabbed Gracious’s handbag, which had US$900 cash, a Huawei P40 Lite phone and seven tins of fish.
After the lightning-fast raid, the crew vanished into the night. But the law caught up with Moyo after police recovered the firearm, the cellphone and some of the stolen property.
Moyo also reportedly made positive indications at the crime scene, a major blow to his defence.
Out of the US$1 200 loot, only US$120 worth of property was recovered.
Magistrate Marondedze postponed the matter to June 20, 2025 for remand.
Police are still on the hunt for Abraham Sibanda.
The streets are watching. The cops are coming.
