IAEA Board adopts resolution against Iran’s Nuclear Program
The IAEA Board passed a resolution condemning Iran’s nuclear activities, citing uranium enrichment and limited inspector access as violations.
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors has passed a resolution criticizing Iran’s nuclear activities. Proposed by Germany, the UK, and France, the resolution received 19 votes in favor, 11 abstentions, and 3 against — with Russia, China, and Burkina Faso voting no.
This marks the third resolution passed against Iran by the IAEA board in the last three years. The previous one, passed in November 2024, had the same vote count in favor but saw slightly different abstentions.
According to the resolution, Iran has violated its obligations by accumulating high-enriched uranium and restricting access to IAEA inspectors. The board urged Tehran to resume full cooperation without delay. The European Union separately described Iran’s continued production of 60% enriched uranium as lacking any civilian justification and warned of a growing risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.
Voting was initially scheduled for Wednesday night but was postponed until Thursday morning after some undecided countries requested more time for consultation. Diplomatic sources in Vienna confirmed this delay.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters before the vote that Tehran would not give up its uranium enrichment rights despite mounting tensions. He also claimed a “friendly” regional country had warned Iran of potential Israeli military action.
In response to the resolution, Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, dismissed the IAEA’s report as “baseless” and a “big lie.” He warned that if the resolution were adopted, Iran would take “appropriate technical actions” immediately.
France, the UK, and Germany issued a joint statement on Wednesday indicating that if Iran does not return to compliance, they would consider triggering the “snapback mechanism” to reinstate UN sanctions.
This resolution comes just days before indirect talks between Iran and the United States are scheduled to resume in Oman. Western diplomats view Iran’s current stance as a serious obstacle to reviving the nuclear deal.
