Iran responds to IAEA Resolution with New Nuclear Enrichment Site Plan
Following the IAEA resolution, Iran announced plans to establish a new uranium enrichment facility in a secure location, escalating tensions.
In response to the IAEA Board of Governors adopting a resolution against Iran’s nuclear program, the Iranian government issued a strongly worded joint statement through its Foreign Ministry and Atomic Energy Organization. The statement denounced the resolution as politically motivated and lacking in technical or legal justification.
The resolution, introduced by France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, accuses Iran of breaching its obligations by enriching uranium to near-weapons-grade levels and restricting inspector access. It passed with 19 votes in favor, 11 abstentions, and 3 against — from Russia, China, and Burkina Faso.
Iran’s joint statement claimed that such resolutions undermine trust and discourage diplomatic engagement. “This decision proves that the policy of interaction and cooperation yields counterproductive results,” the statement read.
In direct reaction to the resolution, Iran announced new measures to escalate its nuclear program. Authorities have reportedly ordered the establishment of a new uranium enrichment facility at a secure location and the replacement of first-generation centrifuges at the Fordow facility with more advanced IR-6 machines.
These steps suggest Tehran is moving further away from the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which imposed limits on its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
Western diplomats warn that if Iran continues to escalate, they may trigger the JCPOA’s “snapback” mechanism, which would restore U.N. Security Council sanctions. The European Union has also raised concerns about the proliferation risks posed by Iran’s 60% enriched uranium stockpile.
Iran maintains that its nuclear ambitions are peaceful. However, U.S. and Israeli officials have repeatedly stated they will not allow Tehran to obtain a nuclear weapon. Talks mediated by Oman between the U.S. and Iran are expected to resume, though prospects remain uncertain.
