Queensbury leans on chemistry entering final four weekend
QUEENSBURY, NY (NEWS10) -- The Queensbury girls lacrosse team has become a Section 2 dynasty, winners of seven straight section titles. Now, the Spartans are looking to assert their dominance in New York State, heading to the state semifinals for the first time since 2022.
The 15-3 Spartans are on a special run so far in the Class C playoffs. Queensbury took down Burnt Hills 12-11 in the section title game on a Kady Duffy goal with under 10 seconds to play, clinching the Spartans' seventh straight title. Queensbury then rolled past Massena 23-2 in regionals, advancing to take on Owego Free Academy in the semifinal Friday.
The last time the Spartans made it to the final four, they advanced to the state title game, falling to Victor in 2022. But Duffy, who played as an 8th grader on that team, and head coach David Huth have never been a part of a group quite like this one. "I think the team chemistry, this team is so close," said Duffy. "It's unlike any other team I've played with. We just all genuinely love each other."
"They are unique in their own way," said Huth. "They are really, really family orientated and this is their lacrosse family and they wanted to go as long as they could for each other. They don't want to lose because of each other. They don't want to make a mistake because of each other. They don't want to let each other down and that's what's really driving them is the fact that they really care about the person to the left, to the right of them on that field."
The Spartans are focused on winning, but soaking in the moment in the process. "The message is kind of just to enjoy the moment," said senior Lilly Trowbridge. "We've been talking about how we're lucky to be here. There's not that many teams left in the state and to just treat every game with our full effort, full energy, because you never know what can happen. We've just been really focusing on our game and how we can improve just the little areas and we're just really happy to be there."
First faceoff on Friday at SUNY Cortland is set for 4:30 PM.
