Afghan refugee Kubra Rezai found murdered; remains discovered in Iranian suspect’s home
Afghan refugee Kubra Rezai was brutally murdered, with her remains found in an Iranian suspect’s home nearly 50 days after disappearance.
The remains of Kubra Rezaei, a young Afghan migrant who had been missing for nearly 50 days, have been discovered in the home of an Iranian man in Pakdasht, Iran. The case has shocked both Afghan and Iranian communities.
According to the Iranian media outlets, the suspect, identified by the initials “A.Kh”, is a 32-year-old married man employed as a factory security guard. Reports suggest that he was acquainted with the victim.
Iranian police reportedly searched the suspect’s home after Rezaei’s family raised suspicions. Inside, they found dismembered body parts of the victim. There were signs that acid had been used in an attempt to destroy evidence.
During initial interrogations, the suspect denied involvement. However, upon being presented with forensic evidence, he confessed. He allegedly committed the crime after learning of Rezaei’s engagement, which triggered a violent emotional reaction.
The brutal nature of the killing and attempted concealment has raised serious concerns about the safety of migrants, especially Afghan women, living in vulnerable conditions in Iran.
The human rights organization Hengaw had earlier reported on June 9 the discovery of the mutilated body of a 26-year-old Afghan woman in Tehran, identifying her as Kubra Rezaei, also known as “Shaqayeq”.
This murder underscores a broader crisis facing Afghan refugees in Iran, where reports of discrimination, abuse, and gender-based violence have been steadily increasing amid growing economic and political instability.
Human rights advocates have called for a transparent investigation and stronger protections for refugees. They stress the need for both Afghan and Iranian authorities to coordinate on justice and safeguard vulnerable communities from further violence.
