OPELOUSAS, la. (KLFY) -- Last night's the Opelousas City Council meeting not only saw an outpour of comments from both residents and elected officials but also the approval of an election that will decide the fate of a $0.01 sales tax renewal for the next 50 years.

Mayor Julius Alsandor spoke about his wishes to see Opelousas grow for the future.

"It's about the city of Opelousas and it's forwardness and continued growth." Alsandor said.

Several public officials characterized this vote as "doing the right thing" for the city overall and urged the public to know that this tax will help propel Opelousas forward.

"Let's do what's right. This needs to pass. So, anyone that wants to talk about why it shouldn't, you can say when you get on the mic 'I don't care for this city' before you start talking. Because it's not fair to the people. Let's do what's right for the city.' Richard said.

Council person Chasity Warren: "If there's anybody here saying we don't need it, you do not have the best interest of this city." Chasity Warren, a council member said.

"We need the tax. I'm for the tax. And if you're for Opelousas, you'll be for the tax too." John Guilbeaux, a council member said.

Council member passionate comments regarding the tax's impact on public works and employee salaries were echoed by several attendees.

"It's hard to do things now to fix a leak, can you imagine 25% of your budget gone? You're shooting yourself in the foot to campaign that I'm not for this tax." Tommy Dejean said.

"For the sustainability and viability of this city to continue on its current course. We have to put this on the ballot and then we have to say yes to the 1% renewal." Donald Broussard said.

After all comments, the council voted on if a public election should take place.

Alderman Charles Cummings. "Yes."

Alderman John Guilbeaux. "Yes."

Alderwoman Delita Broussard. "No."

Alderman Marvin Richard. "Yes."

Alderwoman Sherell Roberts. "Yes."

And Alderwoman Chasity Warren. "Yes."

5 yays, 1 nay, the resolution passes.

That election in the city of Opelousas regarding the sales tax is set for August 16th.
