Glens Falls school resource officer receives regional award
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS) recognized a local Glens Falls school resource officer with the Region 6 Friends of Education Award. Officer John Norton has been with the Glens Falls Police Department for 32 years and has served as a resource officer for the Glens Falls City School District since 2021.
Norton's role in the district is to provide school safety, instruction, and handle criminal investigations, all while actively fostering relationships with staff, students, and parents. SAANYS presents the Friend of Education Award annually to someone who is not a professional educator but has, for an extended amount ot time, supported public school education and been a role model for educators and non-educators.
Glens Falls High School Assistant Principal Bill Levett told NEWS10 that Norton's work goes beyond the traditional duties of an SRO. Levett said he is a mentor, protector, and trusted confidant for countless students.
"His ability to connect with young people, de-escalate tense situations, and foster a safe and welcoming environment is a testament to his dedication and skill," Levett said. "His leadership on the district safety team ensures that all students and staff feel secure in their learning environment."
"We are proud of SRO Norton and the work he does with Glens Falls Schools," Glens Falls Police Department Chief Smith said. "It is true community policing that builds and strengthens our important relationship with our young citizens and their families.”
