Federal grant designated for Ten Broeck Mansion revoked
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany County Historical Association said it lost over $480,000 in federal grant money. Museum officials said they were told the center does not meet the "requirements and needs of the country."
The money was intended for the new Rosanna Vosburgh Center for Education at the Ten Broeck Mansion. The center is named in honor of a Black abolitionist, who worked at the mansion for several years.
Local lawmakers said the cut jeopardizes the center's ability to provide free children's programs.
"There are children and families who will not be served because of the cut of $481,000," Sen. Patricia Fahy said. "The most heartbreaking part of this cut is that it harms our ability to teach the next generation our history."
Museum officials said they had successfully raised 90 percent of the needed funding when the grant was pulled. They plan to keep fundraising despite the funding cut.
The mansion was first built in 1798 and has been a community museum for more than 75 years.
