ZIMBABWE is mourning the loss of a trailblazing icon, Justice Mavis Dorothy Gibson (née Gumede), the nation’s first black female High Court judge, who passed away on Wednesday, in London, United Kingdom.
She was 85.
Justice Gibson, a luminary in the field of law and a beacon of hope for women across Africa, succumbed to cancer, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate through the annals of history.
In a heartfelt statement, Chief Justice Luke Malaba expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the judiciary.
“The Chief Justice of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission, Honourable Justice Luke Malaba; the Judicial Service Commissioners; the Judge President of the High Court; Judges and Magistrates; the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission; and all members of the Judicial Service would like to express their deepest condolences to the Gibson family on the passing of Zimbabwe’s first black female High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Mavis Dorothy Gibson (née Gumede), in London, England, on 21 May 2025.”
Born with a fire for justice and equality, Justice Gibson shattered barriers at a time when few women, let alone black women, dared to walk the revered halls of judicial power.
Appointed as a Judge of the Administrative Court on March 1, 1984, she quickly ascended to the High Court bench just months later on May 15, 1984.
For 12 transformative years, she presided over cases with an unflinching commitment to fairness, earning widespread respect for her intellect, integrity, and compassion.
Her tenure was marked by her sharp legal mind and a resolute belief in the power of law to uplift and heal. In 1996, Justice Gibson took her expertise beyond Zimbabwe, joining the Namibian judiciary, where she continued to champion justice with the same passion until her retirement in 2001.
Her unwavering dedication to the principles of equity and fairness echoed across borders, inspiring countless legal minds in both countries.
After her retirement, she settled in England, where she lived quietly until her passing.
Reflecting on her extraordinary life and career, Chief Justice Malaba lauded her unparalleled contributions.
“She dedicated her esteemed career to the pursuit of justice, leaving an indelible mark on our nation’s legal landscape. She was known for her unwavering commitment to fairness and equity in the courtroom. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of legal practitioners and advocates for justice. As we remember Justice Gibson, we honour her contributions to the Judiciary and her profound impact on countless lives. We encourage all to celebrate her life and the values she stood for.”
