Titanic sub documentary clip captures sound believed to be the implosion
A new clip from Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster, the documentary that reexamines the tragic loss of life aboard the Titan in 2023, features recently uncovered footage from the moments just after the incident that include what some believe to be the sound of the submersible imploding.
The video, taken from the communications center monitoring the submersible's dive to the famous wreckage, was unearthed as a part of the investigation into the matter by the United States Coast Guard. The military branch's Marine Board of Investigation granted the filmmakers "unprecedented access," according to Discovery, as they worked to piece together what exactly happened on that June day, when all five passengers died.
The footage highlights some of the confusion that played out in the aftermath of the implosion that destroyed the OceanGate vessel.
The voyage's director of communications Wendy Rush hears what's described as the sound of a "door closing" and wonders aloud what the bang was.
But when the final communication from the Titan comes through seconds later, a tragically ironic false sense of relief plays out with the crew members listening in.
What they would only learn later was that the message was sent just prior to the implosion, the sound of which reached them first.
The doc also features never-before-seen footage from Discovery host Josh Gates, who visited OceanGate years before the incident and witnessed first-hand some of the issues that would play into the Titan's deadly final dive.
Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster premieres May 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel.
