Billy Joel diagnosed with brain disorder, cancels all concerts
Billy Joel is canceling all his upcoming concerts as his representatives announced the singer has been diagnosed with a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus.
"This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance," a statement posted to Joel’s Instagram said. "Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period."
Normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH, is a disorder in which excess fluid accumulates in the brain, causing issues with thinking and reasoning as well as sometimes walking and bladder control, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
The news will no doubt come as a blow to fans of Joel, a prolific performer who's smashed records at New York's famed Madison Square Garden and delighted audiences for decades. Reps for the "Uptown Girl" singer promised a return to the stage at some point, however.
Joel most recently performed in Chicago in 2024 at Soldier Field, as part of a joint tour with Stevie Nicks. The show played out as a four-hour, summer night celebration. During the concert, Joel gave a shoutout to the city where he has played many times over the course of his career, thanking everyone for “making me a lucky man … I had no idea I’d still be doing this at 75.” He's tied with Pearl Jam, each for playing 7 shows at Wrigley Field.
"Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health," Friday's social media statement continued. "He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage."
In the statement, Joel said, "I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding."
