No charges for shooter in Roseland double homicide sparked by argument over cheese
Authorities said Friday that they will not file murder charges against a person who allegedly fatally shot two men at a Roseland restaurant earlier this week, saying he acted in self-defense.
The shooting was sparked by an argument over what kind of cheese was being put on a customer’s sandwich at Momty’s Grill, located at 9 East 111th St., on Monday afternoon, according to a Chicago police report.
An employee, Lois Wheeler, became upset with the customer, who was yelling at her about the cheese, the Chicago police report said. Wheeler called her son, Tate Wheeler, to the restaurant.
After Tate Wheeler came, a group of men also entered the restaurant, and two of them hit Tate Wheeler in the face, according to the report. Tate Wheeler ran out of the restaurant, chased by the men.
Shots rang out, and responding officers found two men, Dexter Williams and Monte Potts, with multiple gunshot wounds, the report said.
Tate Wheeler checked himself into a Roseland hospital in good condition. He was placed into police custody for further investigation.
Potts was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 5:52 p.m. Monday, officials said. Williams, who was taken to the same hospital in critical condition, died Tuesday at 1:41 p.m.
