Opinion: Tottenham will use one of these three line-ups vs Man United in Europa League final

Tottenham have options to tweak their tactical setup against Manchester United in the Europa League final – and we have looked at three possible line-ups Ange Postecoglou could go for.

In four days, Tottenham Hotspur will take to the field in Spain to face Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final.

It would be a historic night for the club, as it would give the Lilywhites an opportunity to end the season on a high with a European trophy.

However, Postecoglou is set to be without a few first-team regulars, with James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski all ruled out of the final in Bilbao on Wednesday night.

The absence of these creative and attacking talents leaves Spurs with some tactical reshuffling to do.

We have predicted how Tottenham could line up against Manchester United, but with the fluid nature of Postecoglou’s style, there are a number of ways the Australian could set his team up. Below are three different tactical approaches Tottenham could take.

Pape Matar Sarr in the ten role for Tottenham vs Manchester United

Indeed, we expect the core of the Tottenham team to be in place when Spurs take to the field in Bilbao on Wednesday.

The likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie should all return to the starting eleven, despite featuring sparingly in the lead-up to the final.

While the front three and midfield base are almost nailed on, the ten role remains one of Tottenham’s biggest tactical question marks.

Pape Matar Sarr is a doubt for the final, but if fit, he could be used in a more advanced role to link midfield and attack.

Here is the predicted line-up for this setup: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Bentancur, Sarr; Johnson, Solanke, Son.

Wilson Odobert as a fluid Spurs number 10

In the Premier League clash against Aston Villa, we saw Postecoglou experiment with a fluid 4-4-2 system, with Mikey Moore on the right, Heung-min Son on the left and a front pairing of Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert.

It was far from a conventional 4-4-2 with two traditional strikers, as Odobert frequently dropped into midfield areas to aid ball progression and link play, making the setup more unpredictable and dynamic.

Given how that system functioned, there is every chance we see a repeat of it against Manchester United.

Postecoglou praised Odobert’s performance in that hybrid role, and it would not be surprising if the Frenchman plays a central part again should Spurs use this tactical structure.

Here is the predicted line-up for that system: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Bentancur, Odobert; Johnson, Solanke, Son.

Richarlison and Solanke up top in flat 4-4-2

While a fluid shape is a likely choice, Postecoglou also has the option to set Tottenham up in a more traditional flat 4-4-2, with two clear centre-forwards.

In such a system, Spurs could field a front two of Dominic Solanke and Richarlison – a pairing that would offer strength, movement and physicality. It would be an attack-heavy approach, filled with forward-thinking players across the pitch.

However, the drawback lies in defensive responsibility from the wide players, as Brennan Johnson and Heung-min Son are both more effective high up the pitch rather than tracking back.

Even so, with Solanke’s ability to drop deep and help link play, there remains tactical flexibility in this shape.

Here is the predicted line-up for the flat 4-4-2: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Bentancur; Johnson, Solanke, Son; Richarlison.
