Chris Waddle warns Tottenham against inviting former player back to the club
Chris Waddle has expressed reservations over whether a former Tottenham player is the right man to take over from Ange Postecoglou.
Many big-name managers have been linked with the Tottenham job over the last couple of months, but some young English coaches have also been mooted as potential replacements for Postecoglou.
One of these is a man who started his coaching career in the Spurs academy and has just got his club promoted to the Premier League for the second time in his short managerial career.
It has been claimed that Scott Parker has plenty of admirers at Tottenham and the club’s hierarchy have not ruled out an approach for their former midfielder.
Chris Waddle fears move for Scott Parker will be a mistake
Waddle has now pointed to the fact that Parker is unproven at the highest level, and more importantly, he opined that the 45-year-old’s style of play will not be accepted by Tottenham Hotspur fans unless he can win trophies.
The Tottenham legend also suggested that it might not be a wise choice for the English coach to jump ship to N17 at this stage of his managerial career.
When asked whether Parker can succeed at Spurs, Waddle told Football Insider: “The Championship is the Championship, and let’s be honest, the three who go up will likely be the three who go down. That’s the gulf, the gap is that big. So, if they concede 80 goals after conceding 16 this season, Burnley, if he concedes 80 to 90 goals next season, will we be saying he was the right man?
“You’re only as good as your players, another question mark would be, Burnley play counter-attacking football. And they sit and park the bus. Would Tottenham fans enjoy that? No. So, is he a Tottenham-type manager? Listen, if he can win trophies, he’s a Tottenham-type manager. If he’s gonna be mid-table and it’s boring, Tottenham fans will not have it.
“So, will Scott Parker turn that into an attacking team that is exciting to watch, what Tottenham fans will want to see? Hard job. Now, Scott Parker I’m sure, living in London, would love to get an opportunity to manage a club like Tottenham, but will it be a good decision for him? I don’t think it would.”
What Parker has said about his future
The Burnley boss was asked a few weeks ago about his future, but he refused to rule out a summer move, although he also did not indicate that he is leaving.
When asked directly if he sees himself at Turf Moor next season, Parker said that he is happy at Burnley and that his full focus is on ending the season strongly.
He will not get an opportunity to have a crack at the Premier League with the Clartes next season, but perhaps an approach from Spurs or someone else may turn his head.
