Tanzania’s Professor Mohamed Janabi has been nominated to be the next Regional Director for the World Health Organization’s African Region (WHO AFRO).
The nomination was made today during a special session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, held in Geneva ahead of the 78th World Health Assembly.
Professor Janabi’s selection follows the untimely death of Regional Director-elect Dr Faustine Ndugulile in November 2024.
He will succeed Dr Matshidiso Moeti, who served as Regional Director from 2015 and was the first woman to lead WHO AFRO.
The nomination will be submitted for a formal appointment during the 157th session of the WHO Executive Board, scheduled for May 28 to 29, 2025, in Geneva.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Janabi expressed his deep appreciation for the support from member states and pledged to advance the region’s health agenda.
“Your support underscores our collective resolve to build a healthier, stronger, and more united Africa,” he said.
“As we face challenges ranging from infectious and non-communicable diseases to climate change and limited health financing, we must harness African resilience and unity.”
Other candidates for the post included Dr N’da Konan Michel Yao (Côte d’Ivoire), Dr Mohamed Lamine Dramé (Guinea), and Professor Moustafa Mijiyawa (Togo).
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the nomination, saying Professor Janabi brings critical experience at a pivotal moment for the region and the organisation.
“We are grateful for his experience and expertise as we work together to navigate the challenges we face and position our organisation to be stronger, sharper, and more effective in the future.
“I look forward to his appointment by the Executive Board and to working with him for a healthier and safer Africa,” said Dr Tedros.
