Yahya Sinwar’s brother killed in Israeli Airstrike
Mohammed Sinwar, brother of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting Gaza, reports confirm.
On Sunday, May 28, Arab media confirmed that Mohammed Sinwar, the brother of slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza. The attack targeted an underground Hamas command center beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, where Sinwar was reportedly hiding.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 28 people were killed and dozens more injured in the strike. The operation also resulted in the deaths of Sinwar’s deputy, Mohammad Shabana, and Hamas spokesman Abu Obeidah.
Sinwar, who assumed leadership of Hamas in Gaza following his brother’s death in October 2024, was a prominent figure in the organization’s military wing. He was known for his involvement in significant operations, including the 2006 abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
The Israeli Defense Minister confirmed that all indications point to Sinwar’s elimination, though formal confirmation is pending. The airstrike involved multiple waves and bunker-busting bombs to prevent the removal or rescue of the militant leaders.
Following the strike, Hamas has not officially commented on Sinwar’s death. However, reports suggest that his body was found alongside his aides in the targeted tunnel complex.
Sinwar’s death marks a significant blow to Hamas’s military leadership in Gaza. His elimination could potentially alter the group’s operational capabilities and influence within the region.
As the situation develops, the international community remains watchful of the implications this event may have on the ongoing conflict and efforts toward a ceasefire.
