The DEC confirmed remains found off the Mt. Allen Mountain trail in Essex County were of missing 22-year-old Canadian hiker Leo DuFour. Also, a Kingston man was arrested in connection to an alleged shooting. These stories, and more, are in your five things to know this Monday, May 12.
1. DEC: Remains of missing 22-year-old Canadian hiker located
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) confirmed on Saturday that the remains of missing 22-year-old Canadian hiker Leo DuFour were found off the Mt. Allen Mountain trail in Essex County. DuFour was first reported missing in December 2024.
2. 1 person rescued from vehicle in Mohawk River
One person was flown to the hospital on Saturday morning after emergency crews responded to a reported vehicle in the Mohawk River, according to officials. The incident reportedly occurred near Lock 12 in the town of Mohawk.
3. NYS shows record high child flu deaths, measles increase
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday reported more than 1,000 measles cases nationwide. That is more than triple the cases in all of last year. Most cases are related to outbreaks in Texas, but three new cases were in upstate, Orange County New York this week. And the New York Department of Health (NYDOH) reported a record number of child flu related deaths.
4. State, Capital Region authorities warn of 'dangerous' social media trend
Both state and Capital Region law enforcement agencies are warning parents about a new social media trend called the “Chromebook Challenge.” According to officials, the “potentially dangerous” challenge encourages students to intentionally short circuit their school-issued laptops.
5. Kingston man arrested in connection to alleged shooting
A Kingston man has been arrested in connection to an alleged shooting on Sunday morning, according to the city’s police department. Anthony Harding Jr., 28, has reportedly been charged with first-degree assault.
