Excellerate Services | Armed Robberies in Businesses: Why Preparation is Key

Armed robberies are a harsh reality for many businesses in South Africa. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) crime statistics for 2023, there were 35,705 cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances reported. This crime category is a major contributor to the overall violence and fear of crime that affects businesses and communities alike.

98 Armed Robberies a Day Demands Immediate Preparedness

These numbers highlight the importance of having proper security measures and response plans in place to protect both employees and assets. Just as businesses conduct fire drills or evacuation practices, being prepared for an armed robbery is crucial to ensuring everyone knows what to do in such a dangerous situation.

“Being prepared is not just about infrastructure; it’s about creating a culture of vigilance and readiness across all levels of the organisation,” said Adriaan Otto, Managing Director of Excellerate Services. “This includes training staff to recognise potential threats and respond calmly and swiftly in emergency situations. When employees are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to act quickly, it can make all the difference in minimising damage, protecting people, and maintaining business continuity during a crisis.”

Criminals often assess their targets carefully before striking, identifying weak points, entry routes, and vulnerabilities. By understanding your site, recognising potential risks, and preparing for the unexpected, you can minimise both loss and harm.

Key Preparedness Steps to Identify Weak Points and Strengthen Security:

* Site Assessment: Regularly inspect your premises to identify weak points, such as poorly lit areas, unsecured entry points, or inadequate surveillance systems.

* Physical Barriers: Strengthen barriers like doors, locks, security gates, and windows to deter potential robbers.

* Surveillance Systems: Ensure CCTV cameras are functional, properly positioned, and monitored in real-time.

* Alarm Systems & Panic Buttons: Install panic buttons connected to armed response services for quick activation during an emergency.

“Preparation goes beyond infrastructure. Each employee should be trained and know their role in the event of an armed robbery. Conducting regular scenario drills will help ensure everyone remains calm under pressure,” said Wayne Krumm, Head of Excellerate Tactical Intervention Training.

Krumm highlighted key training points to keep in mind:

* Staying Calm: Employees must understand the importance of staying calm and following the robbers’ instructions.

* Avoiding Heroic Actions: Emphasise that no one should attempt to be brave or confront the perpetrators.

* Don’t Follow Criminals: Once robbers leave, staff should not attempt to follow them (This happens more regularly than you’d expect)

* Know Emergency Protocols: Ensure everyone knows how to activate panic buttons, call emergency services, and secure themselves.

Maintaining Vigilance

Drills should simulate real-life scenarios so employees can practice their roles and responses in a controlled environment. Criminals often look for patterns and vulnerabilities, which is why maintaining a high level of alertness is essential.

Encourage employees to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately. Simple habits can go a long way in preventing incidents:

•Consistently monitor who enters and exits the premises

•Remain cautious of individuals loitering nearby

•Be alert to vehicles parked for extended periods

•Limit access to cash or high-value items

•Ensure high-value items are securely stored

Response During an Armed Robbery

In the unfortunate event of an armed robbery, a clear and swift response is critical.

“In the event of a robbery, preserving the crime scene is vital for the investigation. Avoid disturbing any evidence, as even the smallest detail can be critical in identifying the perpetrators and securing a conviction,” said Greg Alberts, Decorated Police Reservist and Head of Specialised K9 Unit at Excellerate Services.

Follow these steps:

1.Call SAPS on 10111 as soon as it is safe to do so.

2.Call an ambulance if anyone has been injured.

3.Secure the crime scene: Ensure no one disturbs the area where the robbery occurred.

4.Do not touch or move anything until the police arrive. This preserves evidence that can assist in investigations.

Understanding your site, conducting regular drills, and implementing strong security measures are vital components of preparedness. Staying vigilant and prioritising employee safety over property will help minimise harm and save lives.

Preparedness doesn’t just reduce the risks; it could make all the difference when faced with the unexpected.
