Pakistan’s Exports to Afghanistan Rise 64% in FY 2024-2025
Pakistan’s exports to Afghanistan surged by 64% in FY 2024-2025, reaching over USD 623 million despite monthly declines.
Pakistan’s State Bank has reported a significant 64.48% increase in exports of goods and services to Afghanistan during the first nine months of the fiscal year 2024–2025 compared to the same period last year.
According to a report published on Sunday, May 11, by The Nation, the total value of Pakistan’s exports to Afghanistan reached over USD 623 million during this period, showing substantial growth in bilateral trade.
Between July and March of the current fiscal year, Pakistan’s exports to Afghanistan totaled USD 623.285 million, compared to USD 378 million during the same months in the previous year, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) stated.
However, the SBP also noted a sharp monthly decline. In March 2025, exports to Afghanistan dropped by 45.56% compared to March 2024, falling from USD 55.9 million to just over USD 30 million.
Additionally, the March 2025 figures were 15% lower than February 2025, when Pakistan had exported nearly USD 36 million worth of goods to Afghanistan. This month-on-month decline reflects volatility in trade flows.
The SBP further reported that Pakistan’s imports from Afghanistan reached over USD 20 million in the nine-month period, marking a 212% increase compared to the same timeframe last year.
These trade fluctuations come amid political and logistical tensions, including the recent temporary closure of the Torkham border crossing, which had disrupted commerce between the two countries under Taliban control in Afghanistan.
Despite monthly declines, the sharp year-on-year increase in trade reflects renewed demand and potential recovery in Pakistan-Afghanistan commerce. However, political instability, border control policies, and regional tensions remain major challenges for sustained growth.
As both nations seek to normalize cross-border trade, long-term strategies, including customs modernization and consistent diplomatic engagement, will be essential to stabilize and expand economic ties.
