French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, speaking early Tuesday, April 29, stated that Iran had significantly breached its nuclear commitments and was dangerously close to acquiring nuclear weapons capabilities. The session was convened at France’s request due to growing fears about Iran’s enrichment progress.

Barrot emphasized that there is “no military solution” to the Iranian nuclear crisis, underscoring that diplomacy remains the only viable path forward. However, he warned that the diplomatic window is “narrow” and time-bound, urging swift and constructive decisions from Tehran.

“We do not wish to further harm Iran’s economy,” Barrot said, “but if Iran refuses to take the right course of action, we will be left with no alternative.”

During the same session, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), cautioned that only “a few weeks” remain to reach a deal, warning that failure to act could lead to greater military tensions in the region.

Meanwhile, indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States continue, with the aim of curbing Iran’s nuclear advancements in exchange for partial sanctions relief. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful purposes and denies any intent to build nuclear weapons.
