For those who have not indulged in the Netflix drama Bridgerton, here’s what you need to know. The show is an eight-part series that opens in 19th-century London and is adapted from Julia Quinn’s bestselling Bridgerton novels. The storyline features the main character, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of the esteemed Bridgerton family who is entering into marriage. She joins neighbor Portia Featherington (Polly Walker) to attract suitors.
We’ll stop spoiling the series for you, but note that the costumes are to die for and will instantly become a source of inspiration for your show-stopping prom looks. During the 19th century, empire waists and princess lines which highlighted the neck. However, according to Ellen Mirojnick, a 71-year-old New York native and veteran costume designer, things changed a bit from the classical styles of the era. “We wanted to experiment with it (the gowns) by layering on other fabrics and embellishment,” Mirojnick told Vogue. “Using either organza, organdy or tulle, we could create another layer on top of the dresses that gives it a new sense of movement and fluidity. It’s almost like a trick of the eye that makes you see it differently.”
Mirojnick also mentioned “we paid a lot of attention to the scooped necklines and how they fit the bust, as opposed to having a [straight] line that doesn’t allow you to see the body,” she added. “This show is sexy, fun, and far more accessible than your average restrained period drama, and it’s important for the openness of the necklines to reflect that. When you go into a close-up, there’s so much skin. It exudes beauty.”
