ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The spring schedule for Amtrak's Empire Service took effect on Monday. The new schedule includes reduced daily trips between Albany and New York City to allow for repairs to the East River Tunnel.
The spring schedule will offer 10 round trips between the Albany-Rensselaer station and New York City. 28 trains per week will have an additional car to increase seating for trips between New York and Albany and between New York and Niagara Falls.
The service cuts, which were first announced in October, were temporarily postponed in December for holiday travel, and the delay was extended for two months in February. The East River Tunnel construction is expected to take around three years and will address damage sustained during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
Trains 238 and 235 will be suspended while the rehabilitation project is underway, and the Adirondack and Maple Leaf trains will be combined into one train between New York City and Albany. Amtrak's updated schedule is available through their website.
