$14.5 million Shawnee County Courthouse renovation work complete, here's what's new
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Local officials are gearing up to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Shawnee County Courthouse and completion of its $14.5 million modernization project.
Shawnee County spokeswoman Amanda Monhollon said in a press release on April 28 that people are invited to attend a special ribbon cutting ceremony immediately following the 9 a.m. county work session on Thursday, May 1 on the courthouse steps. The courthouse has served locals since its completion in 1965.
“This building has been a cornerstone of justice and local government for 50 years, and these renovations reflect our commitment to ensuring it continues to serve the people of Shawnee County for generations to come," Shawnee County Commissioner Aaron Mays said. "We’re proud to celebrate both where we’ve been and where we’re going.”
Recent renovation work on the aging structure cost $14.5 million to modernize the courthouse using funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Major upgrades the building include the following:
- Replacement of the entire mechanical system. This includes new air handling units, boilers, chillers, and associated pumps.
- Complete overhaul of the old HVAC system.
- Installation of a new window system with energy-efficient glazing throughout.
- Conversion of all fluorescent lighting to energy-efficient LED fixtures.
- Installation of a modernized fire alarm system upgraded to current code standards.
- Upgrades to building security and video surveillance systems.
- Ten refreshed and modernized courtrooms, now equipped with advanced audio/visual technology to support remote and video testimony.
- Accessibility improvements, including ADA-compliant public restrooms.
- Landscaping and irrigation enhancements valued at $125,000.
