How To Pick Where to Skydive

So, you’ve decided to go skydiving – awesome! Now comes the big question: how to pick where to go skydiving? With so many skydiving dropzones to choose from, selecting the right one can feel overwhelming. And since this might just be a once-in-a-lifetime (or life-changing!) experience, where you go really does matter.

Can You Skydive Anywhere You Want?

Well … not exactly. You can’t just leap out of a plane wherever you feel like it. Skydiving requires FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) clearance, certified aircraft, trained staff, and strict safety protocols, including specific requirements for designated landing areas.

That’s why jumping at a properly-established dropzone is so important. Dropzones for skydiving must meet precise standards and provide the safest, most organized experience possible.

Here are some things to look for when choosing the right skydiving center for you.

Are They a USPA Group Member Dropzone?

Skydiving is an extreme sport, and while there are inherent risks, reputable dropzones work hard to minimize them. One way to identify a trusted facility is to check if they’re a group member with the United States Parachute Association (USPA).

The USPA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that sets training and safety standards for the sport. Group members are required to follow USPA standards, which means better oversight, consistent training practices, and a commitment to safety. Being a USPA Group Member isn’t mandatory, but it’s a strong sign that a dropzone takes responsibility and accountability seriously.

You can easily check if a facility is a USPA Group Member using the DZ Locator on USPA’s website. We’re proud to share that Skydive Paraclete XP is a longstanding USPA Group Member.

Instructors & Staff

The USPA sets minimum standards and requirements for each instructional rating as well. Instructors must complete annual proficiency checks and stay current with training. At Skydive Paraclete, our instructors not only meet these requirements, they often exceed them.

To become a tandem instructor, for example, you need at least 500 skydives, three years in the sport, successful completion of a certified tandem instructor course, and an FAA medical certificate. We keep a close eye on qualifications to ensure you’re jumping with experienced, dependable professionals who prioritize your safety above all else.

What Aircraft Do They Fly?

All skydiving aircraft get the job done, but some offer a quicker, more comfortable ride than others. Bigger planes can mean more space, faster climbs to altitude, and smoother logistics – especially important if you’re jumping with a group or training with a team.

At Skydive Paraclete XP, we operate one of the largest and most versatile aircraft fleets in the Southeast. Each plane is meticulously maintained to the highest standard, and our variety of aircraft allows us to support everything from first-time tandems to competitive team training.

Our fleet includes:

  • Twin Otter
  • Cessna Super Grand Caravan
  • CASA 212

All of our aircraft are specially modified for skydiving and offer a comfortable ride to altitude. For skydiving teams, the range of aircraft and different exit door configurations provide great options for training. As a tandem student, you’ll be thoroughly briefed on your specific exit setup, so you’ll feel confident and ready when it’s time to jump.

Facilities

Let’s be real, you’ll likely be spending a few hours at the dropzone. The operation is fluid, so we advise our tandem students to plan on being here for half a day. Between check-in, training, and possible weather delays, your visit could run longer. That’s why having a clean, comfortable environment makes a big difference.

At Skydive Paraclete XP, we’ve got the facilities to keep you comfortable. We want your time on the ground to be just as enjoyable as your time in the air. Whether you’re relaxing with friends or soaking it all in solo, you’ll find shaded seating areas, chill spots to hang out, and clean restrooms throughout the property.

We also have PK’s Grill & Pub, our on-site, full-service bar and restaurant, perfect for grabbing a bite before or after your jump. Just remember: no alcohol until after your skydive!

What’s the Vibe?

Look for consistently positive reviews, not just a few 5-star reviews buried between poor experiences. Reach out to the dropzone – are they helpful and friendly when answering your questions? Does their website offer clear, calming info that eases your nerves?

Visit the dropzone. Do you feel welcome and encouraged to watch takeoffs and landings, and soak in the energy of the day?

This is your experience. How you feel matters. A good vibe goes a long way.

Is There Room to Grow?

Planning to jump just once? Great! Thinking you might get hooked? Even better.

Not all dropzones offer programs for students to learn how to skydive, and not all student programs are created equal. Just like choosing where to do your tandem, it’s worth doing a little research to find a training program that’s right for you. You can use many of the same criteria from this article to help guide you through how to pick a good skydiving program.

At Skydive Paraclete, we offer the Paraclete Student Progression (PSP) Program, an 18-level course that not only meets, but exceeds all requirements for your USPA ‘A’ License.

The PSP doesn’t just cover the basics, it sets you up for long-term growth in the sport. You’ll have access to skill camps, seminars, tunnel coaching, and a welcoming community of passionate jumpers. You’ll also train in a wide, grassy landing area that’s easier to spot from the air and more forgiving for new jumpers, helping you build consistency and confidence as you learn.

And yes! We have our own state-of-the-art indoor wind tunnel just down the street, and it’s fully integrated into our student program. Few dropzones in the world can say that!

Bonus Tip: Year-Round Operations

If you’re thinking about getting licensed, choosing a dropzone that’s open year-round helps keep your progression on track. You won’t have to pause for a whole season, and you’ll maintain consistency as you train.

Final Thoughts

Picking the right dropzone is about more than just location. And yeah, we might be a little biased, but if you’re looking for the best place to go skydiving, we’ve got you covered.

At Skydive Paraclete XP, we put safety first, offer a welcoming vibe, and have the infrastructure to support whatever kind of skydiving journey you’re after, whether it’s a one-time thrill or the start of something bigger.

Book your jump with us today! We can’t wait to introduce you to this amazing sport!
