USPS to hold 'Stamp Out Hunger' food drive
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The United States Postal Service will be hosting its "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive on May 10. Carriers will be collecting non-perishable food donations left by mailboxes, in front of houses, in post offices and will deliver them to local community banks, pantries and shelters.
According to the president of Concerned for the Hungry Larry Lewis, this drive is an event that can make a difference in the lives of all neighbors who may be experiencing food insecurity.
"The need is very great," he said. "Finally, this is something that can unite us. We can all make a difference in the lives of our neighbors who are experiencing food insecurity."
According to the USPS, the drive is one way to help someone in your own city or town. Officials said one in 10 Americans face hunger every day in America and in previous years, this drive has donated more than 1.82 billion pounds of food.
Residents around the state can participate by placing a box or a can of non-perishables next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail on the May 10. The carrier will then take the items, the food will be sorted and then delivered to an area food bank or pantry.
