Pakistani Forces kill 54 TTP militants in border operation
Pakistani forces killed 54 TTP militants in a border operation, thwarting their attempt to infiltrate from Afghanistan.
Pakistani security forces have killed 54 militants in a deadly overnight operation in North Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan, Pakistani media reported on Sunday. According to the military’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) wing, the operation, one of the deadliest in recent months, took place in the Hassan Khel area, close to a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP).
The ISPR statement noted that the operation was based on precise intelligence tracking the movement of a large group of militants, referred to by the government as “Khawarij” — a term used for TTP militants. Security forces acted swiftly during the nights of April 25 to 27, intercepting the group as they attempted to cross from Afghanistan into Pakistani territory.
In the ensuing clashes, all 54 militants were killed, making it the largest single-day counterterrorism operation in Pakistan’s ongoing campaign against militant groups. Authorities hailed the operation as a significant success in weakening TTP’s operational capacity along the volatile border regions.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, stated in a press conference that this was the first time security forces eliminated such a high number of militants in one day during the current anti-terror drive. He further added that intelligence reports indicated the militants were under pressure from “foreign handlers” to carry out major attacks inside Pakistan.
The operation occurred amid rising regional tensions, following a recent deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir, which has strained relations between Pakistan and India. Meanwhile, Pakistan has long accused Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government of providing safe haven to TTP militants, an accusation Kabul has yet to officially address.
The success of this operation underscores Pakistan’s intensified efforts to curb militant threats along its border regions. However, the broader challenge of securing long-term stability remains, especially as cross-border dynamics and regional rivalries continue to fuel unrest.
Meanwhile, analysts warn that unless there is sustained cross-border cooperation and regional dialogue, such operations, while significant, may offer only temporary relief. Building lasting peace in the border areas will require not just military victories but political solutions addressing the roots of militancy.
