Texas Longhorns set draft pick record, Quinn Ewers goes to Dolphins in last round
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas broke a program record for the most selections in the current draft format, and their quarterback was the player to push the Longhorns over the top.
Quinn Ewers was the program's 12th pick of the 2025 NFL draft Sunday, going to the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round (No. 231 overall), topping last year's 11 picks to set a new bar since the seven-round format began in 1994.
Dolphins general manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel met Ewers at the Texas pro day before his senior year, and Grier said Ewers "was someone I always had my eye on."
"At that point in the draft, it just made sense to make the pick," Grier said.
The Texas offense is similar to a pro-style offense with various kinds of motion and run-pass options, and head coach Mike McDaniel said Ewers running it for three seasons was a big plus.
"It's beneficial because you can evaluate some nuances you typically have to forecast," McDaniel said. "The way he orchestrates the offense from the motion timing and anticipating things, there's a fit there. We're excited to get him into the program and start working."
Ewers met with media members via teleconference and said some of what the Longhorns did on offense was taken from the Dolphins' offense.
"I'm excited to learn from this franchise and see how they do it," Ewers said.
The draft's final day included Rounds 4-7 outside Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Six Longhorns were selected, at least one in every round, led by tight end Gunnar Helm in the fourth round. Tennessee traded for the pick with Seattle to take him with pick No. 120. He joins first-round quarterback Cam Ward from Miami as the Titans try to revive their offense after it was one of the worst in the league last season.
Helm was one of Ewers' favorite targets last season, hauling in 60 passes for 786 yards and seven touchdowns. He racked up 98 yards on seven catches against Michigan and 91 yards on five catches with a score against Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry.

The Browns traded with the Seahawks to get in position to take Sanders, the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back and Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders.
He was the second quarterback drafted by the Browns. The organization selected Oregon's Dillon Gabriel in the third round.
