Hundreds of disc golfers hit Emporia's courses for tournament
EMPORIA (KSNT) - Discs are flying in Emporia as one of its longest running tournaments returns to Lyon County.
Hundreds of players are teeing off Friday across three different parks as they compete for the top spot in the Glass Blown Open tournament. For players like Azariah Barry, disc golf is a community sport, but it doesn't come without hard work and competition.
"Lots of hours of training and taking your time on every put," Barry said. "Making sure these puts are dead center."
For the next three days, disc golfers are navigating Emporia's legendary parks.
"Four different pools, and each of them are playing two of four courses in Emporia this weekend," Tournament Director Jackie Morris said. "So, we're using all of our parks... Jones, Pan and then we're also using Champions Landing."
For those that aren't necessarily competing, they say they still love being involved.
"It's amazing having a disc golf company that is an artistic disc golf company that is in the 'Disc Golf Capital of the world,' or 'Disc Golf Disneyland as they call Emporia at times," local business owner Kristy Korsak said. "It lets me do my art and art therapy and play disc golf and be around all these amazing people."
The community is celebrating downtown at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. The block party features food trucks and other activities. You can learn more about Glass Blown Open by clicking here.
