Reds look to rock reeling Rockies in Coors Field this weekend

Now’s the time!

The Colorado Rockies lost a baseball game yesterday, something you can say about most days during the early going of this season. What made yesterday particularly special, however, is they actually lost twice.

The Kansas City Royals dispatched said Rockies on both sides of a doubleheader, leaving Colorado sitting at a dismal 4-20 through 24 games of 2025. That’s the kind of record that makes Cincinnati Reds fans cringe, as Reds fans themselves have seen similarly futile beginnings to seasons in recent memory, too.

The Rockies paid the St. Louis Cardinals to take away Nolan Arenado and the remainder of his contract, and Nolan has provided St. Louis with over 13 bWAR since (and is having a nice rebound 2025 so far). The Rockies turned around and took that ‘savings’ and invested it in Kris Bryant, who has provided -1.6 bWAR since (and is currently figuring out if his career might be over due to persistent lower back problems). That, folks, is just a microcosm of how ineffectual the Rockies have been for quite some time, and 2025 has been no different.

The Reds, then, will be looking to pounce on a floundering club, and will do so beginning Friday evening with the surging Andrew Abbott on the mound. Abbott has been scintillating through his first pair of starts this year, fanning 16 against just 3 walks and 2 ER across 11.0 IP. With Hunter Greene and Nick Lodolo slated to follow in the series, all signs point to this being the kind of early season thump-fest that the Reds should completely dominate.

Of course, it is Coors Field, and funky things just tend to happen there. So, this one becomes the kind of series that may end up with more fireworks than initially imagined, with the Reds needing to come out on top and get back to .500 (or above).

It may come as some shock that the blockbuster matchup nationally that is the Cincinnati Reds against the Colorado Rockies did not get picked up by MLB Network or FS1 for a national broadcast. Lucky for us, though, each game will be carried by FanDuel Sports Network, with localized in-market streaming that’s not blacked out anymore.
