Arkell Hall Adult Home to permanently close in Canajoharie
CANAJOHARIE, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Arkell Hall Adult Home in the village of Canajoharie is officially closing on June 30. The Arkell Apartments and the Arkell Senior Community Center, however, will not be affected by the closure, the Arkell Hall Foundation said.
According to the foundation, the population at the adult home has been declining for several years. Currently, the home has 15 residents, which they've stated is an all-time low.
"We will work hard to assist all of our residents in finding alternative accommodations that will meet their needs ably and suitably," the foundation stated.
County Executive Pete Vroman said he's been working with the foundation to understand the reason for closing and to help during the transition.
"Our top priority is supporting those impacted—both displaced residents and employees," Vroman said. "The Arkell Hall Foundation and the Office for Aging are working together to coordinate placement options and expand in-home services, especially for seniors who may be isolated."
The foundation said around 25 staff members will be impacted by the closure. They will receive severance packages and the foundation will assist them in finding roles in Canajoharie and in the county.
Additionally, the foundation is exploring the possibility of adding more apartments to the senior apartment complex to meet the ongoing needs of the aging population.
"We remain committed to working with all partners to ensure strong, compassionate care for Montgomery County’s seniors," Vroman said.
