OCDC inmate accused of assault leading to cellmate's death
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Oklahoma County Detention Center officials have launched a homicide investigation after a possible fight between cellmates lead to an inmate's death on Friday.
According to the OCDC, a detention officer discovered evidence of a fight between two cellmates at around 2 a.m. on Friday while conducting routine safety checks.
Facility medical staff and Oklahoma City Fire Department personnel performed lifesaving measures, and the injured inmate, identified as 40-year-old Clinton Pike, was taken to the hospital.
Pike, who has been an OCDC inmate since February 21 on charges unauthorized use of a vehicle and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, was pronounced dead by hospital staff at 3:10 a.m.
OCDC officials say the preliminary investigation indicates Pike's cellmate, 20-year-old Orenzo Byrd, assaulted Pike resulting in his death.
Byrd was booked into the OCDC on April 11 for a charge of robbery or attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.
The events leading up to Pike's death are still under investigation.
