Lafayette parish residents face flooding and closed roads challenges
LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- Heavy rain caused major flooding and road closures in several areas of Lafayette Parish and residents are dealing with the aftermath.
Kristen Gary, a longtime resident who lives in the Lakeview neighborhood shared what her yard looked like because of the flooding.
“We've had some flooding before in this area." Gary said. "Like, usually this yard backs up, especially when there's a flash flood. But this is probably the highest it's been."
Gary said usually they have flooding closer to the fence but having the rain go through from the coulee into her backyard surprised her.
"I think it was like the rain maybe and then additions like the backup of the coulee, usually the coulee, there's like a huge drop off." Gary said. "We had to build this fence when we first moved in so the kids wouldn't get hurt. But this is the first time that I'm able to see the coulee like through the fence right there. It’s a lot more than normal."
Gary added she left for a class in the morning but when she returned her neighborhood was completely different
“I was surprised to see that even though there hadn't been weather this morning, the roads were blocked off." Gary said. "Thankfully, it was right past our neighborhood because otherwise I wasn't really sure how I was going to get in the neighborhood. So I was surprised because when I left this morning it was fine. When I came back an hour later, it wasn't. So it's got to be backed up, not just the weather, which I guess is why it's so much higher. Because if it was just the weather, it'd probably be about half this."
Residents, like Gary, are still dealing with some damage from the flood and are staying more mindful for the future weather to come.
