And as Europe’s soccer elite enter the decisive weeks of the 2024-25 campaign, one question looms larger than most: Will the next winner come from Real Madrid, Barcelona, or beyond?
Among the top candidates, names like Vinicius Junior and Lamine Yamal have been whispered in heated debates. But one name stands out—not just for his extraordinary form, but for the uncertainty clouding his future. A top contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or is reportedly unhappy with a new contract offer from his club, opening the door to a potential summer departure that could rock European soccer.
That player is Raphinha, the Brazilian winger who has evolved from a fringe option to a global sensation under Hansi Flick’s guidance at Barcelona. A year ago, he was reportedly on the club’s transfer list, but fast forward to today, and he is the Blaugrana’s talisman, scoring 30 goals and providing 21 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions.
His form has not just reignited the Blaugrana’s domestic hopes—it has fueled their dream of a Champions League and La Liga double. If they pull it off, Raphinha could become the first Brazilian since Kaka in 2007 to win the Ballon d’Or.
“Raphinha has been one of the best players in the world during the 2024–25 season,” reported Diario Sport, underlining just how far the winger has come in such a short time. Despite being pushed to the left flank due to Lamine Yamal’s rise, the Brazilian has flourished, embracing the new challenge with relentless drive and adaptability. His versatility, creativity, and clinical edge have made him Barca’s most dangerous weapon.
Contract disputes cast a shadow
But as the spotlight intensifies, contract talks behind the scenes have taken a tense turn. Barcelona, having finalized key renewals in January and February, is now focused on securing Raphinha’s long-term future. However, the Brazilian is dissatisfied with both the proposed salary and the contract structure.
His current deal runs until 2027. Barcelona has offered an extension that adds one guaranteed year and a further optional year, taking him potentially to 2029. But Raphinha wants both years guaranteed up front, not as a 1+1 extension.
“There are two details of the club’s first offer that the Brazil international is not happy with: contract length and salary,” wrote Catalan newspaper Sport, highlighting the main obstacles stalling the agreement. On top of that, the 28-year-old is reportedly seeking a significant pay increase, commensurate with his performances this season. So far, the club’s offer hasn’t met those expectations.
Interestingly, negotiations have progressed in one area: a significantly reduced release clause. The Catalans are reportedly willing to include a $91 million clause in the new contract, giving Raphinha flexibility to leave in the future. That clause could become pivotal if tensions persist into the summer transfer window.
Temptation abroad—But not in Saudi Arabia
While Saudi Pro League clubs are circling, ready to offer Raphinha a fortune to make the leap to the Middle East, the winger is said to be uninterested in leaving European soccer’s elite stage—especially with the Ballon d’Or within reach. Despite the money, he reportedly views Saudi Arabia’s league as not competitive enough to maintain his level or reputation.
