Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham has become a hot topic as the summer transfer window edges closer.
Romero has reportedly turned down a new contract offer from Spurs, despite the club tabling a sizeable pay rise to keep him in north London.
Tottenham, for their part, haven’t taken the refusal lightly. The message from the Spurs board to Romero has been blunt: either sign the new deal or prepare to be sold.
With La Liga sides monitoring the situation, Cristian Romero doesn’t seem fazed by the idea of a Tottenham exit. In fact, his latest interview has only added fuel to the fire.
When asked about his future, Romero replied, “We’re in the Europa League semi-finals, and I want to finish the season on a high note. After that, we’ll see. My focus is always on growing and looking for new places to continue developing.”
Pressed further on his preferred destination, the centre-back admitted: “A league I would like to play in would be Spain to compete in all the major leagues.”

Those very words suggest one thing – Cristian Romero thinks he is ready for bigger stages than Tottenham can offer, craving elite-level competition and silverware.
Naturally, for fans, it’s not easy to accept the idea of losing a player of Romero’s quality. Spurs Supporters have been split in their reaction to Romero’s recent transfer comments; some expected this outcome, while others feel his commitment is now in question and want him benched for the remainder of the season.

“Those are the things to imitate,” he said. “Hopefully, they realise who the true responsible ones are, and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year.”

Those comments don’t come from nowhere – they’re the words of a player fed up with what he sees at Spurs.
Since joining in the 2021/22 campaign, Tottenham’s league finishes have been anything but encouraging.
Fourth in his debut season, then eighth, followed by fifth, and now a bleak 16th with just a handful of games to go. The signs point to decline, not progress.
While rivals have added depth and quality, the Lilywhites have seemingly gone backwards. The cause? Lack of investment and vision.
