8. Locked
Want to watch Bill Skarsgård be tortured by Anthony Hopkins for 95 minutes? Then Locked is for you.
The star of such horror reboots as The Crow and Nosferatu ditches the prosthetics for a lean thriller about being trapped in a car. In this remake of the Argentinian film 4X4, deadbeat dad Eddie Barrish (Skarsgård) can't get a break. So, to prove to his child and baby mama he's got the scratch to be a decent parent, he attempts to rob a really posh car that's sitting out in a parking lot. Unfortunately for Eddie, this particular vehicle is rigged with cameras, tasers, and a remote driving system that will turn his clumsy attempt at grand theft auto into a Saw-like horror thriller. Playing the malicious mastermind behind it all is Hopkins, who is mostly seen and not heard.
The premise is intriguing, but the execution from screenwriter Michael Arlen Ross and director David Yarovesky is awful. A half-hearted class warfare thriller that makes a spectacle of torture, Locked is anything but fresh. — Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor

7. Hell of a Summer
Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard co-writes, co-directs, and co-stars alongside Billy Bryk in this slasher comedy of errors. Wolfhard and Bryk play besties who are returning to the sleepaway camp Camp Pineway — not as campers but as counselors. They hope this will unlock new levels of summer shenanigans and sex. But when a killer starts slaughtering their fellow counselors ahead of the campers' arrival, it's hard to know who to trust.
Playing an overgrown but earnest camp counselor, Fear Street's Fred Hechinger proves the heart of this bloody comedy. And while an absolute charmer, he can't elevate this parody that has only a superficial understanding of this horror subgenre. The result is a movie that's fitfully amusing, but never scary and rarely surprising. — K.P.

6. Babygirl
As a titillating follow-up to the humorous whodunnit Bodies Bodies Bodies, writer/director Halina Reijn delivered Babygirl. Nicole Kidman stars as a high-powered CEO balancing a demanding professional life with a personal life that includes her gentle theater director husband (Antonio Banderas) and high-energy teen daughters (Vaughan Reilly and Esther McGregor). Her world turns upside down when a cocky intern (Harris Dickinson) begins to flirt with her in a most inappropriate manner.
Delving into the juicy topics of sex, power dynamics, forbidden lust, and identity, Babygirl is an electrifying blend of humor and yearning that is absolutely dizzying, in the best way possible. As I wrote in our rave review out of TIFF, "Emotionally naked, unapologetically provocative, and defiantly playful, Reijn's film joyfully explores the complicated ties that bind. Amid stiff competition, she delivers one of the sexiest, most thrilling films of the year."* — K.P.

5. Gladiator II
Ridley Scott returns to ancient Rome with this long-awaited sequel to Gladiator. Following in the footsteps of his idol/father, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is a gladiator pitched into the violent contest for the amusement of two brat emperors, Emperor Geta (Stranger Things' Joseph Quinn) and Emperor Caracalla (Thelma's Fred Hechinger). But while they party with the likes of beguiling arms dealer Macrinus (Denzel Washington in top form), a coup brews with the help of a dashing Roman general (The Last of Us' Pedro Pascal).
Full of robust action sequences inspired by stranger-than-fiction gladiator battles, this sequel is sure to shock and awe audiences. But a bit of warning. If you're still hurting from Sunday night's episode of The Last of Us, you might want to give yourself some time before seeing this Pascal offering. — K.P.

4. You, Season 5
Are you ready for the final chapter of the murderous adventures of Joe Goldberg? Season 5 of You is back, as are Penn Badgley's broody vibes and trusty baseball cap. Joe is revisiting his old stomping grounds in New York City, where he worked at Mooney's bookstore and murdered poor Guinevere Beck.
On these streets, will be be able to make a fresh start with his second wife Kate (Charlotte Ritchie)? Will he be haunted by old ghosts? Will he find a new girl to obsess over? Will old habits die hard? Ten new episodes will answer all these questions, while being twisted as hell and even hotter than that. — K.P.

3. Étoile, Season 1
Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino turns to the ballet for her latest TV show, Étoile. Named after the French word for star, or the term for a ballet company's principal dancer, the series centers on two ballet companies — one French, one American — undertaking a daring publicity stunt in order to rejuvenate the public's interest in ballet. The companies swap key talent, like étoile Cheyenne Toussaint (Lou de Laâge) and choreographer Tobias Bell (Gideon Glick), for one season, resulting in a clash of cultures and egos that's a delicious treat to watch.
Like Sherman-Palladino's prior work, Étoile finds its humor in snappy dialogue and the strength of its ensemble, led by Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg, whose dueling ballet directors are always putting out some fire or another (or, let's face it, starting some of their own). Come for the lovingly filmed dance scenes, stay for the drama kings and queens who make the ballet tick. As I wrote in my review, "While [Étoile] may not immediately shine as brightly as Sherman-Palladino's best-known works, it's still a frothy fun look into the breakneck world of dancers fighting to make art on their own terms." — Belen Edwards, Entertainment Reporter

2. Conclave
One of the best films of 2024, Conclave has new relevance with the passing of Pope Francis. If you wonder what's next for the Catholic church, this surprisingly funny thriller will give you some idea!
Adapted from Robert Harris' 2016 novel of the same name, Conclave is set deep within the sacred halls of the Vatican, where cardinals gather together for a series of secret votes to determine who among them will be God's representative on Earth. And as dean of the conclave, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked not only with keeping things running smoothly but also sussing out what skeletons lie in the closets of the contenders.
And yet within this dramatic framework, the charming ensemble (which includes Isabella Rossellini, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow) laces in a catty sense of humor, which has sparked memes on social media. Through this divine blend of suspense and subtle comedy, helmer Edward Berger delivers a thriller that is devilishly entertaining.* — K.P.

1. Andor, Season 2
The best Star Wars show is back for its second (and tragically final) season, so make sure to get on the Andor train while it's still rolling. Season 2 picks up one year after the end of Season 1, with Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) now a fully fledged member of the Rebellion. Andor, Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly), and more continue the fight against the Galactic Empire, but their revolution comes with deep personal sacrifice, leading Andor down some of its darkest roads yet.
From tense board meetings to covert missions on the planet Ghorman, Andor remains part suspenseful spy thriller, part terrifying showcase of fascism in motion. By all rights, it's unmissable TV, whether you're a Star Wars fan or not. As I wrote in my Season 2 review, "Andor goes out on its own terms, leaving a brilliant, blistering look at fascism and those who fight it in its wake." — B.E.
