Soto, Alonso, Marte lead Mets over Phillies in 10 innings
NEW YORK (AP) — Juan Soto threw out Nick Castellanos at the plate to prevent the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Starling Marte capped a two-run 10th with a walk-off single and the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep that extended their winning streak to seven.
New York went 7-0 on its second-longest unbeaten homestand behind a 10-0 run against the Phillies, Braves and Marlins in April 2015. The Mets are 12-1 at Citi Field and opened a five-game lead over their NL East rival Phillies.
With the game tied 2-2, Castellanos tried to score from second on Max Kepler’s two-out single to right. Soto made a one-hop throw to rookie catcher Hayden Senger that was slightly to the first-base side. Senger snagged the ball, lunged across the plate and tagged Castellanos, who slid feet first.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson tried to call for a video review, but plate umpire Mark Wenger appeared to decide Thomson waited past the 15-second limit.
Castellanos hit a go-ahead single in the 10th off Edwin Díaz, who left with a left hip cramp, and Max Kranick (2-0) escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam by retiring Alec Bohm and Kepler.
Automatic runner Francisco Lindor advanced to third on Soto’s groundout off Jordan Romano (0-1) starting the bottom half and Pete Alonso doubled for his NL-best 26th RBI.
Brandon Nimmo was intentionally walked, Mark Vientos struck out and Marte singled into short center for his 12th walk-off RBI.
BRAVES 4, CARDINALS 1
ATLANTA (AP) — Eli White hit a tie-breaking three-run homer in the eighth inning and Atlanta beat St. Louis to win the three-game series.
JoJo Romero (1-3) gave up singles to Matt Olson and Ozzie Albies before White went deep to left field off Ryan Fernandez. White was making only his sixth start of the season, including his fourth in left field.
Daysbel Hernández (3-0) stranded two inherited base runners in the eighth when he struck out Jordan Walker. Hernández stayed in the game to pitch the ninth.
Miles Mikolas threw six scoreless innings to outpitch Bryce Elder in a matchup of right-handed starters who entered the game with ERAs over 7.00.
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the first when Nolan Gorman walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Nolan Arenado’s double to left field.
It was the only run allowed in six innings by Elder.
TIGERS 6, PADRES 0
DETROIT (AP) — Reese Olson allowed two hits in 7 1/3 scoreless innings as Detroit defeated San Diego to win the three-game series.
Justyn-Henry Malloy homered and doubled for the Tigers, who won two of three from the Padres to improve to 9-4 at home. Detroit has won six of its first eight series this season for the first time since 2015.
Olson gave up two singles — both to former Tiger Jose Iglesias — and walked one batter while striking out seven.
Kyle Hart (2-2) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out six for San Diego, which has gone 3-5 after a 14-3 start.
Iglesias led off the third inning with a single to right, but Olson retired the next 16 hitters until Oscar Gonzalez walked with one out in the eighth. Iglesias followed with his second hit of the game, bringing Tommy Kahnle out of the bullpen.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on Gleyber Torres’ first-inning home run.
Malloy made it 2-0 with a fifth-inning homer, ending Hart’s day, then increased the margin to three runs with an RBI double in the seventh. Riley Greene’s broken-bat single scored Malloy with Detroit’s fourth run, and Dillon Dingler made it 6-0 with a two-run homer in the eighth.
Fernando Tatís Jr.’s on-base streak ended at 23 games.
REDS 5, MARLINS 2
MIAMI (AP) — Austin Wynns homered, doubled and singled, Brady Singer struck out eight in six strong innings and Cincinnati beat Miami.
Wynns hit a solo shot off Sandy Alcántara (2-2) in the third. The catcher has nine hits in his last 11 plate appearances, including two homers. He was a triple shy of the cycle after driving in a run with a double in the ninth.
Singer (4-0), making his fifth start for Cincinnati, gave up a two-run homer to Matt Mervis in the first but allowed little else. His eight strikeouts matched a season high, and he allowed only four hits and no walks before being relieved by Ian Gibaut in the seventh.
Spencer Steer hit a run-scoring single in the fifth that broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Reds the lead for good.
TJ Friedl hit a leadoff double and had a steal for the second straight game.
Emilio Pagán got three straight flyouts in the ninth to earn his fifth save.
Eric Wagaman doubled in the first inning for the Marlins to stretch his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games.
Alcántara allowed three runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Mervis’ home run was his team-leading seventh of the season.
YANKEES 5, GUARDIANS 1
CLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Rodón pitched seven strong innings, Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs and Aaron Judge raised his major league-leading average to .415 as New York beat Cleveland to avoid a series sweep.
Rodón (3-3) allowed just four hits, struck out five straight in one stretch and kept the Guardians off balance. Fernando Cruz and Luke Weaver pitched an inning each to complete the five-hitter.
Judge and Goldschmidt each drove in a run in the first inning off Luis Ortiz (2-3) as the Yankees took the finale of the three-game set. New York hasn’t been swept in a series of at least three games in Cleveland since 1970.
The Guardians saw their winning streak stopped at five and fell to 7-2 at home.
Judge, who went 4 for 4 on Tuesday, tripled off the wall in deep center field in the first inning to score Ben Rice from first. The Yankees added another run on Goldschmidt’s RBI double.
Judge has reached base in 21 straight games. The superstar entered the game leading the majors in batting average, hits and on-base percentage.
Rice and Goldschmidt drove in runs in the second inning off Ortiz, who needed 76 pitches to get through the first three innings.
Guardians rookie Will Wilson collected his first major league hit in the ninth.
CUBS 7, DODGERS 6
CHICAGO (AP) — Pete Crow-Armstrong homered and drove in four runs, and Chicago topped Los Angeles.
Dansby Swanson had two hits and two RBIs as NL Central-leading Chicago improved to 4-1 on an eight-game homestand.
The Cubs beat the Dodgers 11-10 on Tuesday night when Miguel Amaya homered with two out in the ninth inning and Ian Happ hit a game-ending RBI single in the 10th. They went 4-3 in their season series against the World Series champions.
Crow-Armstrong went 6 for 9 with two homers and seven RBIs in the two-game set. The speedy center fielder is batting .396 (21 for 53) with five homers and 14 RBIs in his last 13 games.
Teoscar Hernández homered and drove in four runs for Los Angeles, which lost for the third time in four games. Andy Pages hit a solo drive for the second straight night.
MARINERS 8, RED SOX 5
BOSTON (AP) — Right-hander Emerson Hancock struck out a career-high seven batters and J.P. Crawford had four RBIs to help Seattle to a win over Boston.
Hancock (1-1) allowed two runs on five hits with two walks, lowering his ERA from 12.71 to 7.71. Andrés Muñoz, who entered the game leading the American League in saves, pitched a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the season.
With Seattle leading 1-0 after Mitch Garver’s first-inning single drove in Julio Rodríguez, Crawford’s first home run of the season scored Ben Williamson and Leo Rivas, who opened the fourth inning with consecutive singles. Crawford added another RBI with a bases-loaded single in the seventh, scoring Rowdy Tellez.
Seattle added two unearned runs off left-hander Brennan Bernadino in the sixth and two more runs off right-hander Josh Winckowski in the seventh.
NATIONALS 4, ORIOLES 3
WASHINGTON (AP) — Luis Garcia Jr.’s sacrifice fly to deep center plated Alex Call with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, James Wood led off the game with his eighth homer and Washington beat Baltimore.
Wood drove the fifth pitch of the game by Orioles starter Tomoyaki Sugano 431 feet over the right-center field wall and Josh Bell added a two-run shot as the Nationals raced out to a 3-0 lead on three hits in the first inning.
Kyle Finnegan allowed two singles but struck out Tyler O’Neill and got Heston Kjerstad to pop out in the ninth for his ninth save of the season. Jorge Lopez (1-0) earned the win. Gregory Soto (0-1) took the loss.
Wood’s blast left the park at 116.3 mph and was second career leadoff homer. The first came against Mitch Keller on April 15 at Pittsburgh.
Bell’s homer was his fourth of the season and 27th of his career at Nationals Park.
Down 3-0, the Orioles scored single runs in the third, seventh and eighth innings. Jordan Westburg’s triple led off the eighth. Ramon Urias’s sacrifice fly to center field brought him home to tie the game at 3.
ASTROS 3, BLUE JAYS 1
HOUSTON (AP) — Christian Walker homered in a three-run second, Ryan Gusto pitched well into the sixth and Houston beat Toronto to sweep the three-game series.
Walker led off the second with a home run to left off Bowden Francis (2-3), Yainer Diaz tripled and scored on Zach Dezenzo’s RBI single and Yordan Alvarez capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Gusto (3-1) allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Gusto has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his three starts this season.
Bryan King pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Bryan Abreu threw a scoreless eighth.
George Springer walked, and Ernie Clement doubled with one out in the ninth, but Josh Hader struck out Alejandro Kirk and induced a flyout by Myles Straw for his seventh save.
Houston has won five of its last six.
TWINS 6, WHITE SOX 3
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach homered to help Minnesota beat last-place Chicago.
Larnach hit a solo shot in the sixth, his second blast in two games, to make it 4-3. Buxton hit a two-run homer an inning later as Minnesota won its second straight in the series.
Chicago scored all three of its runs in the fifth, one on a wild pitch and another on an error by second baseman Luke Keaschall. Minnesota tied it in the bottom of the inning on Brooks Lee’s sharp single that drove in Ty France.
Twins starter David Festa was pulled after facing two batters in the fifth, marking the third time in three starts that the right-hander didn’t make it through five innings. He allowed two runs — his first runs allowed this season — on four hits and three walks.
Justin Topa (1-1) worked the sixth for the victory, and Danny Coulombe threw the ninth for his first save.
PIRATES 3, ANGELS 0
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Oneil Cruz blasted a 463-foot home run to center field — the fourth longest in MLB this season — and Andrew Heaney retired the first 13 batters he faced to help Pittsburgh down Los Angeles.
Heaney (2-1) struck out nine and allowed just one hit in six innings for his first win at Angel Stadium since being traded by Los Angeles in February.
Heaney struck out the first six batters he faced. He retired the side in order in the third and added two strikeouts in the fourth.
Travis d’Arnaud got the Angels’ first hit in the fifth with a one-out double down the left-field line. Their second hit came with one out in the ninth before Dennis Santana earned his third save by getting Mike Trout to pop out.
Trout, who went 0 for 3 with a walk in the series opener, struck out three times for Los Angeles, which has lost seven of its last nine games.
Pittsburgh won its first road series of the season after a 9-3 victory Tuesday in the opener.
GIANTS 4, BREWERS 2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Wilmer Flores hit a two-run single in the the sixth inning to back another strong start by Giants ace Logan Webb, and San Francisco beat Milwaukee.
Jung Hoo Lee added three hits to help the Giants improve to 14-2 against right-handed starters this season, tops in the majors.
Webb (3-1) pitched around traffic most of the night while outdueling Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta (2-2). Webb didn’t allow a run over 6 1/3 innings and had six strikeouts with three walks while lowering his ERA to 1.98.
The Brewers scored twice in the ninth off closer Ryan Walker before Camilo Doval got the final two outs for his fourth save.
Brice Turang had three hits and two RBIs for the Brewers.
ATHLETICS 5, RANGERS 2
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Shea Langeliers had four hits and Nick Kurtz drove in a run with a base hit his first time up in his major-league debut to help the Athletics beat Texas on a night that saw the Rangers’ Joc Pederson end a 0-for-41 slump with a pinch-hit double.
Lawrence Butler homered — his fourth — to center field leading off the first on a 3-2 pitch from Rangers starter Kumar Rocker (1-3) to ignite a four-run outburst. Tyler Soderstrom doubled and scored on a hit by Langeliers. Kurtz, the fourth pick in last year’s draft, made it 3-0 with a two-out single and Gio Urshela added an RBI double.
Rocker was done after a two-out walk to Soderstrom and a base hit by Langeliers in the second. Jacob Latz entered and walked JJ Bleday and Jacob Wilson to make it 5-0. Rocker allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk.
JP Sears (3-2) gave up two runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts over five innings for the Athletics. The 29-year-old left-hander is 5-1 all-time against Rangers and has won four straight against the club.
The Rangers scored on Wyatt Langford’s sixth homer — a solo shot in the fourth. Kevin Pillar singled and scored on a groundout by Adolis García in the sixth.
RAYS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 6, 11 INNINGS
PHOENIX (AP) — Kameron Misner and Yandy Díaz had RBI doubles in the 11th inning and Tampa Bay held on to beat Arizona, overcoming Corbin Carroll’s two home runs.
Misner drove in Chandler Simpson with a double off Drey Jameson (0-1), but was thrown out trying for a triple. Jonathan Aranda walked and scored on a two-out double by Díaz.
Eric Orze surrendered an RBI single to Alek Thomas leading off the bottom half, then walked Tim Tawa. Carroll drew a one-out walk to load the bases, but Orze induced Geraldo Perdomo to hit into a game-ending double play for his first career save.
Pete Fairbanks (2-1) got the final two outs in the 10th for the win.
Carroll homered on the third pitch from Rays starter Taj Bradley. Carroll added his ninth of the season with a two-run shot off Mason Montgomery for a 5-4 lead in the seventh.
