From Camper to Counselor: Meet Camp Sunny Counselor Colby Beckham
In today’s blog, we’re featuring another installment of our Camp Sunny Camper to Counselor series, where we celebrate the amazing individuals who have grown up with Camp Sunny and now give back as inspiring counselors!
This time, we’re thrilled to sit down with Colby Beckham, a former camper turned counselor who currently works at both our FUNrichment afterschool program and at Camp Sunny.
From favorite camp experiences to long-lasting bonds with counselors, Colby shares what makes Camp Sunny so special and how her experiences as a camper have shaped the counselor she is today. Q&A with Colby Beckham: Camp Sunny Summer Camp Counselor
Q: How old were you when you first attended Camp Sunny, and do you remember how you felt coming here for the very first time?
A: I was around 8 years old when I first attended Camp Sunny. Coming here for the first time, I remember I felt an overwhelming feeling of happiness and excitement.
Q: What was your favorite activity or tradition as a camper? Why was it special to you?
A: My favorite activity was going on field trips*. Field trips stuck with my memory the most in a positive way.
* A note from the Camp Sunny staff: We still go on weekly field trips at Camp Sunny! Here’s a sneak peek of some of the places we’ll be visiting in Summer 2025:
Q: Were there any counselors who left a lasting impression on you when you were a camper? What made them so memorable?
A: There were two counselors who left a lasting impression on me and who I remember fondly: Ms. Kaitlin and Mr. Brent. Ms. Kaitlin used to do cheerleading at Sun Country with my older sister, and she also became my cheerleading coach when I grew older. I believe we bonded over those two factors. Mr. Brent was just a very friendly person who any child in our group could always talk to.
Q: Any new additions to camp that you wish had been there when you were a camper?
A: Some new additions I wish were there when I was a camper are the variety in special guests and more activities in different rotations.
Q: What inspired you to come back as a counselor?
A: I simply came back as a counselor because Sun Country had such a positive impact on my childhood.
Q: How do you think your experiences as a camper have influenced the kind of counselor you are today?
A: Since I have experience, I like to pass my positive experiences on to the kids I teach so they can have the same impact.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of being a Camp Sunny counselor?
A: The most rewarding part about being a camp counselor is definitely seeing how happy the kids are to see me day after day. Also, I love seeing them grow from the things I teach them.
Q: If you had to describe Camp Sunny in three words, what would they be?
A: Spreads happiness everywhere.
Q: Any advice for young campers who might want to come back as counselors one day?
A: Do it!!!
