Russia and Pakistan strengthen collaboration to tackle terrorism threats from Afghanistan
Russia and Pakistan emphasized the need for stronger cooperation to combat terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, focusing on regional stability.
The Russia-Pakistan Joint Working Group has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing terrorist threats originating from Afghanistan territory. On Tuesday, April 22, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan released a statement highlighting the group’s meeting and its key agenda. The meeting was held as part of ongoing bilateral efforts to strengthen regional and international security cooperation.
According to the official statement, the session was attended by Pakistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister for UN Affairs and Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister. Both sides participated in in-depth discussions aimed at assessing and countering the rising threat of terrorism in the region. The forum served as a platform to exchange strategic views on shared security concerns.
The meeting primarily focused on international terrorism threats and emphasized the need for joint actions to tackle them effectively. Both delegations acknowledged the evolving nature of terror networks, particularly those with cross-border operations and safe havens. As such, they agreed on intensifying collaborative measures to enhance border security and intelligence sharing.
The joint statement concluded with mutual recognition of the importance of collective efforts in confronting terrorist challenges. It stated, “The meeting concluded with a shared emphasis on boosting cooperation against mutual threats posed by terrorist groups. Both sides agreed that collective action remains essential to ensure regional and global stability.”
Pakistan has repeatedly expressed concern over the presence of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operatives on Afghanistan soil. Islamabad has called on the Afghan Taliban to extradite TTP members who, according to Pakistan, continue to plan and execute attacks from across the border. The Afghan Taliban, however, deny that TTP fighters are operating from Afghanistan.
The joint dialogue between Russia and Pakistan highlights the strategic importance of regional cooperation in combating terrorism. The acknowledgment of mutual concerns and shared goals indicates a growing alignment between the two countries in addressing cross-border security threats.
