Mets Win Sixth Straight, Best Phillies 5-1
Pitching, good defense, and timely hitting have been the theme for the New York Mets so far this season. In Tuesday’s 5-1 win against the Philadelphia Phillies, New York got just enough out of their starter Griffin Canning, and then their offense finally broke through late to cap off their sixth-straight win. New York has taken the first two of this three-game series against their National League East Division rival and has done so by holding off a stout Phillies lineup.

Lindor & Alonso Strike Again
Throughout this homestead, Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso have been the anchors in the lineup. Once again, Lindor had another three-hit game. He led off the night with a single and one inning later, notched an RBI single down the right field line to make it 2-1 Mets. The score remained 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh when Alonso stepped to the plate with Lindor on third. Alonso ripped a double on a sharp line drive to left field to make it 3-1. Two more runs scored on a Luis Torrens RBI single with the bases loaded to put the hammer down on a Mets 5-1 win.
Pitching And Defense Hold The Phillies
Griffin Canning got the start for the Mets, and he had to battle through three uneasy innings against the tough Philadelphia offense. He was able to escape multiple jams, struck out five, and kept the Mets’ lead at 2-1 before handing it off to the bullpen. Canning’s ERA is now 3.12. Huascar Brazobán, A.J. Minter, Ryne Stanek, and José Buttó pitched four scoreless innings to close things out.
In the top of the eighth, Stanek had trouble finding the strike zone and walked Kyle Schwarber with the Mets still up 5-1. Then, Tyrone Taylor, who was an unsung hero on Monday after beating out a would-be double-play ball that set up Lindor’s second home run of the game, came through again. Nick Castellanos flew out to Taylor, who came charging and saw Schwarber halfway to second. Taylor was able to throw the sleeping Schwarber out to complete the double play.
