Albany Co. distributes flower seeds with Earth Day initiative
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany County Legislature launched an Earth Day pollination project on Tuesday to promote the sustainability of local pollinators. With spring in full swing, Albany County residents can pick up free wildflower seed kits at the Legislature’s Democratic Majority Office within the Harold L. Joyce Albany County Office Building.
Legislators will also be handing out the kits with educational materials to residents over the next few weeks. A kit comes with two seed balls that are made of wildflower seeds, clay, and compost.
Anyone interested in scheduling a pickup during regular business hours should contact Public Information Specialist Morgan Zell by calling (518) 447-5696 or emailing Morgan.Zell@albanycountyny.gov.
Albany County Legislature Chairwoman Joanne Cunningham said that there are direct threats to the sustainability of the environment, and the seed kits are a proactive initiative to foster the county's natural resources. Legislature Democratic Majority Leader Dennis Feeney said the initiative is about taking action.
"We didn’t want to simply talk about the importance of pollinators; we want our residents to take part in protecting them," Feeney said. "Each wildflower seed ball is a tangible reminder that it’s up to us to build the environment pollinators need to thrive."
