Cohoes student volunteers help plant trees for Earth Day
COHOES, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- April 22 is Earth Day, a day meant to recognize the planet and our role in protecting it. In the Capital Region, Capital Roots took that mission to heart.
The non-profit planted 100 trees in a single day on Tuesday, marking their largest collective tree planting effort ever as they celebrated their 50th anniversary. The trees were planted along I-787 and the Cohoes Boulevard Corridor.
Forty-two volunteers from Cohoes High School helped the group complete their goal.
"For them, this is a project they can look back at in 20 years when the trees are really fully grown," Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler said. "They can look back and say, 'Hey, I did this when I was in high school. They can tell their kids."
The initiative is supported by federal grants from the USDA's Urban Forestry Service.
