Opelousas police Sgt. arrested, charged with off-duty domestic violence
OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- An Opelousas police sergeant was arrested yesterday for an alleged off-duty domestic violence incident, deputies said.
Romalis Thomas, 39, was arrested and charged with domestic abuse battery related to an incident that occurred outside of the Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino on Monday, authorities said.
Authorities said they initiated the investigation following a request from Opelousas Police Chief Graig Leblanc.
"I have requested the Louisiana State Police to conduct this investigation to uphold transparency and reinforce the trust our community places in us." Leblanc said. "In line with our departmental policies and as part of our commitment to a thorough process, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while we conduct an internal investigation."
No bond has been set for Thomas.
The investigation remains ongoing and we will update as more information is released.
