Woman dies after Topeka apartment fire
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Fire officials say a woman who was severely injured in a fire on Monday has died as a result of her injuries.
Alan Stahl with the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) announced on Tuesday, April 22 that Terri K. Dones, 51 has died following an apartment fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and associated with "careless smoking."
Fire crews were called around 4:30 p.m. on April 21 on reports of a structure fire at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of Southwest Lane Street. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the apartment's basement.
Some people inside the apartment were able to evacuate prior to the arrival of fire crews. Firefighters did rescue one resident, later identified as Dones, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
Dones is the second person to die in a fire in Topeka in the past week. Michael J. Ullman, 65 was also killed on Friday, April 18 as a result of a house fire.
