Look up! Lyrid meteor shower to peak over Portland skies tonight
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Stargazers are in for a treat as the Lyrid meteor showers reaches its peak tonight under clear skies in Portland.
This annual meteor shower is expected to produce up to 20 meteors per hour, although some experts say to expect closer to five. The meteors will look like faint streaks across the sky.
Tips for Viewing
The cloud-free skies will help folks across the region see meteors tonight. Look well after sunset, which is around 8pm in Portland, and before the moonrise, at around 3:30am. The best window for viewing may be from about 9:30pm to 3:30am.
You will want to move away from light pollution of the city, too. Find a rural area with the darkest skies possible and let your eyes adjust to the darkness.
