In a new report from Vatican News (via CBS News), they shared that on Easter Sunday, he took his final popemobile ride to greet crowds gathered for the holiday.
He then rested at his home in the Vatican and ate dinner.
He first began showing signs of illness at 11:30 pm ET Sunday night, which would be 5:30 am local time on Monday. An hour later, he gave “a gesture of farewell” to his nurse, Massimiliano Strappetti, from bed. He then fell into a coma and passed at 7:35 am local time.
“He did not suffer. It all happened quickly. It was a discreet death, almost sudden, without long suffering or public alarm, for a pope who had always been very reserved about his health,” the news organization said.
As for some of his final words, he told his nurse on Sunday amid his popemobile ride, “Do you think I can manage it?”
And then afterwards, before retiring home, he told the nurse, “Thank you for bringing me back to the square.”
You can find out his cause of death, which was also just recently released.
